Tonight’s program features:
Pulitzer Prize winning author, Oscar Hijuelos reading from his memoir, “Thoughts without Cigarettes.” Listeners can obtain a Cd of his reading and the conversation with Nina Serrano recorded live at la Pena in Berkeley in June 2011 as a premium for subscribing to KPFA.
Hijuelos’ novel “The Mambo Kings” became a major Hollywood movie starring, Antonio Banderas and Celia Cruz making a guest appearance. Hijuelos chronicles his life as the child of pre- revolutionary Cuban immigrants in the rough part of New York City in the early 50’s and his coming of age. He discusses identity, family, love, Latin music and jazz.
