Tonight’s program welcomes May Day, a celebration time for international working people and Mother Earth’s spring: featuring: News Headlines from the Americas; Radio Cuba Canta with historic Cuban music recordings and commentary, poetic commentary on the upcoming racial-profiling legislation in Arizona, Ecology, Streets of Aztlan and a calendar of upcoming events. Our guest tonight, Ned Sublette is a musician and music scholar who will share his music and insights.

Author and Cuban music scholar Ned Sublette will be performing at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts on May 2, 2010.

Broadcast Tribute to Graciela Perez: 1915-2010

She was known as “la gran dama de la música cubana”, and “The First Lady of Afro-Cuban Jazz.“.
Tonight, Radio Cuba Canta pays tribute to the memory of Graciela Perez.

Producer Emiliano Echeverria will present recordings from his collection of rare and vintage Cuban music featuring Graciela from her first sessions with the Orquesta Anacona with founder Yolanda Castro (who also passed away, on April 4th), through her career with the orchestra of her brother Machito, her continued work with Mario Bauza, and her last sessions with master percussionist, Candido Camero.
