Tonight’s edition of Radio Cuba Canta will start with a mix of great conjuntos, followed by the Community Music Calendar at 9:30pm of upcoming events around the SF Bay.

At the second hour of the program will include a tribute to the great Cuban “Jazz Bands, including music from Los Hermanos Castro, Benny More y su Orquesta Gigante, Julio Cueva, Casino de la Playa, Orquesta Riverside, y mas! The last half hour of the program will conclude with a mix of contemporary Cuban music from today.

Back by popular demand direct from Cuba, world class virtuoso flautist Orlando “MARACA” Valle returns to Yoshis in Oakland with his 10 piece world class Cuban group, which been called “the most influential Afro-Cuban band of the emerging century” (Chicago Tribune) and “one of the hottest names in jazz” (LA Times). Maraca brings a mix of cutting-edge Afro-Cuban Jazz,. Rumba, Folklore, Son, Cha Cha Cha,  Danzon, Salsa Cubana, and Timba.

Born in Havana, Orlando “Maraca” Valle is arguably the most famous and versatile contemporary Cuban flautist in the world. Maraca has been leading his different bands and projects for more than 15 years with many performances in some of the most prestigious international Jazz, Latin and world-music festivals and venues worldwide. 

As a soloist and bandleader, Maraca has made 9 albums and 3 video releases, each one awarded during national contests in Cuba and highly acclaimed by national and international critics. His nomination to the 2003’s Grammy Awards as “Best Salsa Album”, made him the youngest Cuban artist ever nominated by NARAS. Maraca’s original style of fusing jazz improvisations with his afro-cuban roots has made his sound highly recognized worlwide, as the epitome of Cuban popular dance music and Afro-Cuban Jazz.
